‘Intentionally Diverse’ Charter Middle School Opening in Gowanus, New York

Apparently it was only a matter of time before enrollment “quotas” wormed their way into the charter school sector. This new “intentionally diverse” approach, whether educationally appropriate or not, puts the traditional random lottery method of admission, which has been a hallmark of the charter sector for two over decades, at-risk of being sidelined. In fact, in states like Massachusetts, state officials routinely chastise charter schools that don’t “mirror” the local district’s demographics, even if enrollment is based on a pure random lottery.
